It doesn’t always take endless funds to find early stage breast cancer.

Low cost education of public and health staff enhances detection of early stage breast cancer, study shows.

Finding cancer early is arguably the most effective tool to date to save lives and minimise mortality. Early diagnosis and referral to specialists from first line health clinics have a far greater prognostic impact compared to fighting cancer in its late stages.

Until there’s a cure for cancer all together, we are many in the community devoted to fighting this disease. One successful approach is clinical downstaging. Meaning: Finding the cancer at its earlier stages. But how?

Health staff training and public awareness downstaged breast cancer

A pilot study in Sarawak, Malaysia, used training of health staff and public awareness to successfully downstage breast cancer and cervical cancer.

“The program consisted of (i) training health staff in hospital and rural clinics to improve their skills in early cancer detection, (ii) raising public awareness through pamphlets, posters and sensitization by health staff.”

The health staff was responsible for a population of around one million people. The staff was trained during a two day period, learning both theoretical and practical aspects of three cancers; NPC, breast and cervix cancer.

“Data analysis revealed that the program achieved downstaging in two of the cancers. Breast cancer in stage III and IV was reduced from 60% (1994) to 35% (1998) (P < 0.0001) and cervical cancer in stage III and IV from 60% (1994) to 26% (1998) (P < 0.0001). This reduced the region’s late-stage presentation for breast and cervix cancer by half over a period of 4 years.“

Although this study was done quite a few years ago, it shows how quick a cost effective approach can enhance cancer findings in earlier stages, especially in rural areas where access to proper screening programs are less than optimal.

We are committed to clinically downstaging breast cancer

Thermaiscan is painfully aware of this issue in low- and middle income countries, where the result of insufficient screenings are, in fact, deadly.

We are committed to finding innovative solutions that will promote clinical downstaging in breast cancer.

FemTech and cancer

We use thermal cameras to find early stage breast cancer.

The prestigious competition She Loves Tech chose ThermaiScan as the top 1 startup in the Nordic, and top 24 in the whole world during 2020.

She Loves Tech is the world’s largest competition for women and technology taking place in more than 20+ countries. She Loves Tech aims to empower women and assist in the development of female leaders in the tech industry.

Read more about She Loves tech and their mission here.

Female focused technology is getting more and more recognition these days (and we are here for it!) –  but what is FemTech, and why is it so important?

FemTech is improving, supporting and promoting women’s health

FemTech is technology that is designed towards the needs of women. If women are not taken into account, problems can occur. In the article “The deadly truth about a world built for men – from stab vests to car crashes” published in the Guardian, you find many interesting examples of flawed design where women were not considered. We suggest you take some time to read the full article later on (find the link at the bottom of this article).

So – what can happen? Well, did you know that standard office temperatures are designed for men’s metabolism, and too cold for most women? On average, the temperature is five degrees too cold for women. And this is because of a miscalculation from the 1960’s. A chilling example, but not horrifying. Some cases where only men are the data set is way more harmful than others, and may even lead to death. The Guardian writes:

“When a woman is involved in a car crash, she is 47% more likely to be seriously injured, and 71% more likely to be moderately injured, even when researchers control for factors such as height, weight, seatbelt usage, and crash intensity. She is also 17% more likely to die. And it’s all to do with how the car is designed – and for whom.”

Caroline Criado-Perez, The Guardian

You can see how being inclusive in design is not only important, but life saving.

Our company ThermaiScan are developing a breast cancer risk assessment tool using AI, thermal technology and a smartphone. And for us, FemTech isn’t just a buzzword. FemTech is rather a core part of our business idea: to develop a solution that has true health related impact for women globally. Our goal is to design a product that is inclusive for all bodies that are at risk for developing breast cancer. There is a real and acute need in all corners of the world to find breast cancer earlier. As we have recently stated, the numbers are dire. Current breast cancer screenings aren’t sufficient, especially for young women with so called dense tissue breasts.

By designing a cost efficient, accurate and remote tool to screen for cancer, more women will have the possibility to find early stage breast cancer using nothing more than a phone and a small thermal camera.

Why do we need FemTech?

If we look at the numbers, HealthTech geared towards women is still an underdeveloped area. A recent article in MobiHealthNews stated that only:

4% of all healthcare research and development is targeted specifically at women’s health, even though women spend an estimated $500 billion annually in medical expenses.”

Globe Newswire

As you can imagine – there’s huge potential for growth in the FemTech industry. And the need is here. We are happy to see that there’s a growing awareness for early detection of breast cancer due to its correlation with survival chances, indicating that investments in the field will grow. Globe Newswire reported that the global breast cancer diagnostic market is forecasted to reach over USD 8,7 Billion by 2027.

To conclude: FemTech is here to stay, and so are we. The ThermaiScan team is working hard to bring our innovation to the market as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time, let’s talk soon again.

Impact healthcare on the horizon for India

Covid-19 has opened people’s eyes to the need for innovation in the healthcare sector.

It is apparent that the world need remote solutions that have real impact on both communicative and non-communicable diseases.

ThermaiScan are determined to build just that: Healthcare solutions with impact.

We are currently focusing on finding breast cancer early using thermal technology and AI. With our affordable pocket sized tool, we screen for early stage breast cancer development.

By utilising AI and thermal technology combined with a smartphone, small clinics and remote doctors/nurses (non-specialists) will have the possibility to incorporate a new, accurate and affordable tool to screen for breast cancer, without needing to invest in expensive machines.

Our screening tool will open up the possibility for many more women to be able to screen for breast cancer. The impact an accessible tool like this has are enormous since it is portable, affordable and fast. ThermaiScans breast cancer pre-screening solution is non-toxic, non-invasive and suitable for younger women and women with dense tissue breasts. The screening process is comfortable and private.

Currently, there are more than 250 million breast cancer screenings performed globally. With a remote and more accessible tool, even more screenings will available. The health- and societal benefits are with this astronomical.

ThermaiScans greatest wish is to bring our breast cancer screening tool to market as soon as possible. By winning the Innovation Challenge arranged by the India-Sweden Innovation Centre, we are closer to our goal.

The future is br(AI)ght for Hyper Island students

A short reflection on visiting our old school and what skills are needed in the future.

Last week, the ThermaiScan team in Sweden were invited to the digital business school Hyper Island. The purpose: A lecture with the new class of AI Business Consultants in their module Ecosystem of the AI Landscape. A class just in the beginning of their transformative and experience-based journey that Hyper Island is known for.

With four Hyper Island alumni in the team, it was a given to drop what we were doing and offer up some advice and share our journey and learnings.

We kicked off with some reflection, and then each of us from the team shared our “why”, followed by a presentation of our breast cancer screening solution, some obstacles along the way and what’s next.

Being the first time sharing this amount of information about us and our company to anyone, naturally some nervousness was involved. Would they ask questions? Would they be bored?

Well, we had nothing to worry about! In reality, the students were very much involved in our presentation, fearlessly raising hands one after another, challenging us with tricky questions about data security, the future of thermal cameras and how to handle competition. We didn’t even have time for the workshop we had planned – the Q&A got intense and the students even said no to breaks (Yup. Inspiring, right?)

Looking back at this session, our key takeaways are:

  • These students, their mindset and their competences are very much needed in the AI business landscape.
  • When we dare to share success, failures and even our own personal struggles, we grow and contribute to a collective learning experience. Openness and trust is real.
  • We LOVE to inspire more people to use technology to solve real problems.

We’ll end with a comment from a student that pretty much summarizes what we feel.

I think it’s a dream job, when you every day use your energy to help other people, to defeat this huge global threat. Thank you!

Did your breast cancer screening get postponed? You’re not alone.

Breast cancer screenings are getting postponed globally due to Corona. The long term effects are worse than you can imagine.

Experts fear that many will discover breast cancer much later due to postponed or cancelled screenings. Reports show that there is up to 51 % less mammography screenings compared to the same period last year, which can be linked to patients’ fear of catching Covid-19, according to Kara Friend, MD at Riverside Health System.

Inevitably, this will unfortunately lead to a worse prognosis and excess in deaths. In the United States alone, the delays in screenings is expected to lead to around 10 000 excess deaths in breast cancer and colorectal cancer during the coming decade. This means an  ∼1% increase in the U.S. directly connected to the corona pandemic, according to an article published in Science by Norman E. Sharpless this june.

During an interview with Al Jazeera about missed and delayed cancer screenings in the UK, Professor Clare Turnbull from The Institute of Cancer Research speculate that some cancers can go from curable to more advanced (often meaning that there’s a recurrence of the cancer in a few years time after initial treatment) in as little as two months of delayed screening.

To both catch up with the screening gap and keep the cancer spread to a minimum, we at ThermaiScan believe that it is crucial to provide more accessible cancer screening methods in the near future. If a similar pandemic emerges, the world needs to be ready.

If patients are advised to stay home due the risk of infecting seriously ill patients, what can we do to keep up with breast cancer screenings?

On a more positive note, the corona pandemic has pushed health innovations forward, within tech such as IoT (Internet of Things), IoMT (Internet of Medical Things), AI and cloud based services. These are in the forefront of changing the healthcare industry towards a future of mobile health. In a recently published TNW-article, Ricky Philip brings up many interesting points on how the pandemic has revolutionized medical connectivity due to the increasing demand for high-quality medical services that keep both staff and patients safe.

We believe this MedTech-revolution is just beginning. In the coming months and years, we will see an exciting shift in the MedTech and HealthTech industry. It is time to provide small clinics and mobile health care providers with access to better and more advanced diagnostic tools that still are cost efficient. For this to have an impact, we invite clinicians, innovators, entrepreneurs and legislators to collaborate globally to push for such a change. The sooner the better, considering the dire numbers of expected excess deaths connected to delays in screening programs.

Now more than ever, the world needs remote access to high quality medical services!
